UK Passport Photo Requirements for Online Applications

UK online passport photo rules explained: size, background, lighting, glasses and file limits for the GOV.UK upload. Free photo maker.

The basics

The UK printed size is 35 × 45 mm. For online applications you upload a digital photo that is a JPG, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and between about 50KB and 10MB.

Background and lighting

A plain light-coloured background (light grey or cream), no shadows on your face or behind you, and no reflections or red eyes.

Face and expression

Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed and both eyes open and visible. Hair should not cover your eyes. Glasses are only allowed if there is no glare and your eyes are clear.

Make it with PicFitter

Use the UK passport photo maker to crop 35 × 45 mm at 300 dpi (413 × 531 px). If the upload page needs a smaller file, try the 500KB tool.
