How to Remove a Background Without Uploading Your Photo

Why privacy matters for ID photos and signatures, and how to remove backgrounds entirely on your own device.

Why uploading is a risk

Many online background removers send your photo to a company server. That may be fine for a stock photo, but not for an ID picture, a signature, a passport photo or pictures of your children.

How in-browser removal works

Some tools load an AI model into your browser and run it on your device using WebAssembly. The picture is processed in memory and never leaves your computer or phone.

Try it

The PicFitter background remover works this way. You can check it yourself: open your browser developer tools, go to the Network tab, process a photo and see that no image upload happens.

The trade-offs

The first use downloads a model of about 46 MB, and a model small enough to run in a browser cannot match the largest paid cloud tools on very hard images. For products, portraits and signatures it usually works well, and the Restore and Erase brushes help with the rest.

Good uses

Signatures, ID photos, profile pictures and product photos for your shop.
