Print size vs digital size
A printed passport photo is measured in millimetres or inches. An online upload is measured in pixels and file size (KB). They are different, so a correct print size can still be rejected as a digital file.
United States online photo
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Shape | Square, 2 × 2 inch proportions |
| Pixels | Between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 |
| Format | JPEG |
| File size | 240 KB or less |
United Kingdom online photo
The UK asks for a JPEG at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high, and a file between 50KB and 10MB. Use the UK maker and confirm on the official site.
Canada and Australia
Both countries publish their own digital rules. Print sizes are 50 × 70 mm for Canada and 35 × 45 mm for Australia. Always confirm digital limits on the official page before you upload.
How to hit the file size
Make the photo at the right pixel size first, then compress it to the limit with the 200KB tool or any custom size. Do not take a screenshot afterwards.
Common digital mistakes
Photos that are too small in pixels, photos saved as PNG, photos cropped with the head too small, and files over the limit. A phone photo of a printed photo is also rejected by many portals.
Print sizes in pixels
For printing at 300 dpi multiply inches by 300: a 2 × 2 inch photo is 600 × 600 pixels. More detail is in passport photo size in cm, inches and pixels.
