How to Fix a Passport Photo Background (Shadows and Non-White Walls)

Ways to get a plain background for a passport photo, from retaking it to replacing the background.

Best fix: retake it properly

Stand about one metre in front of a plain white or light wall, facing a window. A simple retake is often faster than editing, and authorities prefer a natural plain background.

If the wall is the problem

Hang a white sheet or poster board behind you and smooth out wrinkles. Keep the sheet flat so the light stays even.

If you have a good photo with a bad background

Use the ID photo background remover and choose a white or light background. It runs in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded.

Check hair and edges

Zoom in and use the Restore and Erase brushes to clean hair edges. A halo or cut-out hair can cause a rejection.

Check the rules before editing

Some countries do not accept heavily edited photos, and some stores check this. Confirm on the official website that a background replacement is allowed for your application.

Then crop and size

After the background is fixed, crop with the US, UK, Canada or Australia maker.
